Imagine a world where healthy, pesticide-free, great-tasting leafy greens are available to everyone. This is the big vision that CEO of BrightFarms, Steve Platt, has for his company and the food industry as a whole. While the food supply chain has great intentions, it has certainly fallen short in consistently producing products that are all-natural. But it's all about to change.
Many companies and organizations like BrightFarms, TagOne, and the GS1 recognize that these shortcomings don't have to remain our fate, but instead approach them as opportunities for improvement. BrightFarms does this by growing healthy, locally sourced produce. In this episode, Platt remarks that for the longest time, the supply chain relied on two main producers of lettuce in California and Arizona. This means that in order to make it to your front door in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, less than optimal preservation methods are used to keep it "fresh". This is why access to locally grown products is essential. Similarly, TagOne strives to improve the produce supply chain technology options by bringing transparency via blockchain software solutions. With the FDA's New Era of Smarter Food Safety, the produce industry will soon have to make these transitions.
